RadRunner 1000W Motor Wheel Upgrade
The RadRunner is a capable platform held back by a modest motor. This is the fix.
We've built a 1000W geared hub motor into a 20×4" fat wheel engineered specifically for the Rad Power Bikes RadRunner 1 and 2 — including the non-standard 168mm rear dropout that makes most off-the-shelf motor wheels a no-go. Swap your rear wheel, plug in the Z916 connector, and you're done.
What changes
More torque off the line. Better hill climbing. A motor that keeps up when you're loaded down with cargo or passengers. The Bafang G062 is a proven platform — the same motor family trusted by e-bike brands and conversion shops worldwide.
What doesn't change
Your existing battery, controller, display, and throttle all stay. This is a wheel swap, not a full conversion. No rewiring, no controller tuning, no compatibility headaches.

Installation
This is a rear wheel swap. If you're comfortable changing a bike wheel and routing a motor cable, you can do this yourself in about 30 minutes. A basic bike toolkit is all you need — no specialized e-bike tools required.
Not comfortable doing it yourself? Any local bike shop can install this. We're also happy to answer install questions via email, or book an install at our Santa Cruz shop.
About This Build
Every wheel is built and inspected by Temper Bicycle Works before it ships. We're a specialty e-bike repair and conversion shop in Santa Cruz, CA — this isn't a product we drop-ship from a warehouse, it's one we've sourced, spec'd, and stand behind.
FAQ
Will this work on my RadRunner?
This wheel is built for the RadRunner 1 and RadRunner 2. It uses the 168mm rear dropout spacing specific to those models. Not confirmed for RadRunner+, RadRunner LT, RadRunner Plus, or other Rad models. Send us your serial number if you're unsure.
Do I need a new battery, controller, or display?
No. The whole point of this upgrade is that your existing RadRunner electronics work as-is. The motor draws more current from your stock 48V controller — which is well within its safe operating range — and your battery delivers it the same way it always has. No reprogramming, no firmware flash.
How much faster will my RadRunner go?
Top speed is governed by the controller, so legally you're still capped at Class 2 speeds (20 mph throttle). The difference is felt in torque and hill climbing, not top speed. You'll accelerate faster, climb steeper grades, and carry heavier loads without bogging down the motor.
Will this reduce my range?
Slightly. The 1000W motor draws more current under heavy load (hills, acceleration, cargo). On flat cruising at moderate assist, range is similar to stock. On hilly terrain or with consistent throttle use, expect 10-20% reduction in total range. Most riders find the trade worth it.
Does this void my Rad Power Bikes warranty?
Yes, modifying the motor will void the Rad warranty on the drivetrain (motor, controller, related electronics). Your frame, battery, brakes, and other unmodified components remain under their original warranty terms with Rad. The wheel itself comes with a 2-year warranty from Temper.
Can I install this myself?
Yes, if you're comfortable changing a rear wheel and routing a cable. The motor cable plugs directly into your stock RadRunner harness via the Z916 connector — no splicing, no soldering. Plan on 30 minutes for someone comfortable with basic bike work. Watch a YouTube video of a RadRunner rear wheel removal first if you've never done it.
What tools do I need?
Standard bike tools: 15mm wrench (or socket) for the axle nuts, a freewheel removal tool if you're transferring your existing freewheel, and a chain whip. That's it. No e-bike-specific tools required.
Is it street-legal?
The wheel itself doesn't change your bike's classification. Your RadRunner is still Class 2 (20 mph throttle limit) because the controller governs speed, not the motor. You're legally riding the same e-bike class — just with more usable power under the speed limit.
How long is the warranty?
2 years from purchase date. Covers manufacturing defects on the motor and wheel build. Doesn't cover damage from collisions, water intrusion past IP rating, or improper installation.
