Why riders pick the Photon
Most mid-drive conversion motors force a trade-off: power or weight. The Photon doesn't. Very few motors deliver this much torque, and almost none of them do it under 3 kg. That's the reason the Photon shows up on serious DIY builds where ride feel matters as much as raw power — Bullitt cargo conversions, gravel bike e-builds, and anything that needs to climb hard with weight on board.
The other thing that sets it apart: Bluetooth tuning. The Photon's app lets you reshape power delivery for your specific bike, terrain, and riding style — not just toggle between fixed assist levels. Combined with EggRider display support, it gives you the kind of control normally reserved for premium factory e-bikes.

Installation at Temper
Photon installs are not a beginner DIY — they require bottom bracket removal, chainline adjustments, and electrical integration. We offer professional installation at our Santa Cruz shop on your existing bike. Pricing varies by build complexity. Book a consultation or call (831) 200-3593 to discuss your project.
FAQ
Will the Photon fit my bike?
Most standard BSA threaded bottom brackets (68mm or 73mm) work directly. Other BB types (BB30, PressFit, T47, etc.) require an adapter. Send us your frame info or bring your bike in for a compatibility check.
What battery should I use with the CYC Photon?
The Photon accepts 48V or 72V batteries. For most builds, a 48V 20Ah pack is the sweet spot — enough range for daily use, manageable weight. 72V setups deliver more peak power for steep terrain and heavy cargo. We stock several battery options or can source what you need.
How does the Photon compare to a Bafang BBSHD?
The Photon is lighter, quieter, and has more refined tuning via Bluetooth app. The BBSHD is cheaper and more proven for budget builds. Different price points, different priorities — both work, the Photon is the better pick when ride feel and weight matter.
Is the Photon street-legal?
The Photon can be configured as a Class 1 (pedal assist only, 20 mph), Class 2 (with throttle, 20 mph), or Class 3 (pedal assist, 28 mph) e-bike via Bluetooth tuning. At higher power settings or speeds beyond 28 mph, the bike legally becomes a motor vehicle (moped/motorcycle) requiring registration and insurance — see our E-Bike Class System guide.
