Temper Build: Soma Wolverine

Staff Bike
This is my 2020 Soma Wolverine B-Type, built from the frame up and currently in its 4th or 5th configuration, now as an electric cycle truck. The awesome thing about this frame, and the reason I picked it in the first place, is that it can be built up in so many different ways. As a pretty major tinkerer this really appeals to me, and in the past I have set it up as a gravel bike, a lightweight commuter, single speed cruiser, and now a cargo bike. It’s missing the usual Soma decals because I got it powder coated when I first bought it, and I think that is a Soma Fog Cutter headbadge.
The fork used here is an older Clydesdale Cargo Fork from Crust Bikes. Cargo forks like this use a smaller 20” wheel, which allows the front rack to be placed lower to the ground. This provides a lower center of weight and much better handling with heavier loads compared to a typical fork and rack combo. For me, this is a nice middle ground between a much larger full size cargo bike and a regular bike.
Otherwise, it has a mix of components from when I originally set it up as a gravel bike, as well as some parts bin stuff that I had lying around to make it more comfortable for carrying cargo. For the basket I’m using an old prototype which happens to fit my backpack perfectly. It also comfortably fits 3 or 4 grocery bags, and handles well with 30lbs of groceries. It’s also super useful for making pick-ups or deliveries during the day to avoid tangling with traffic and parking.
The e-bike kit is definitely the cherry on top, and the end result is a capable electric cargo bike with the footprint and weight of a regular bike. Our 20” Front Hub Kit is a perfect match for this fork, and it makes the extra weight of the fork and any cargo melt away. I only have a throttle installed right now, and I typically use it to boost up to speed in traffic or when it’s loaded down with weight. I highly recommend adding this kit if you have a Clydesdale Fork or a front loading cargo bike without a motor.
