How It Works
The Temper e-bike kit converts your existing bicycle into an electric bike.
Fork Compatibility
Our front hub kit has three main fork requirements: a steel fork, 100mm spacing, and 10mm open dropouts. Check all three before ordering. Most standard road, hybrid, and city bikes built before 2015 meet all three.
Steel Fork
Rigid forks are usually made of steel for strength and safety. Our hub motor creates additional force on the fork dropouts — steel forks are strong enough to handle this safely. Test yours by holding a magnet to the fork: if it sticks, it's steel. Aluminum and carbon forks require a torque arm (included) — see the installation guide for details.
100mm Fork Spacing
Fork spacing (O.L.D. — Outer Locknut Distance) is the distance between the inside faces of your fork dropouts. Our motor axle is designed to fit 100mm spacing, which is the most common standard. Vintage and folding bikes sometimes have narrower spacing (90mm, 74mm). Mountain bikes and newer road bikes may have wider spacing (110mm Boost, 135mm) — our kit won't fit those.
10mm Open Dropouts
Fork dropouts are the slots where your wheel axle sits. Our motor axle fits dropouts with a 10mm opening — the common standard on most bikes. Some older forks have a 9.5mm or smaller opening. Newer mountain and road bikes use 12mm or 15mm Thru-Axle forks, which our kit won't fit without modification. A small file is all it takes to open up a 9.5mm dropout to 10mm.
Other Compatibility Considerations
These factors are relevant to compatibility but can all be solved with adapters or alternative configurations — they won't stop most builds.
Hand Brakes
Our motor wheel has mounting points for a disc brake rotor and a braking surface on the rim for rim brakes. We recommend disc or rim brakes for the higher speeds of an e-bike. Bikes with only a rear coaster brake should have at least a front rim brake added before riding.
Water Bottle Bosses
Our battery uses standard water bottle cage mounting points — two bolts spaced 64mm apart, usually on the downtube or seat tube. If your frame doesn't have these, we offer a Battery Mount Adapter that can attach the battery anywhere on the frame.
Square Taper Crankset
Our Pedal Assist Sensor is designed to fit square taper or one-piece cranks. It may be compatible with other crank types — if it doesn't fit, we offer a PAS Adapter, or you can run the system with throttle-only.
22.2mm Handlebars
Our thumb throttle fits a standard 22.2mm grip diameter — the common size on almost all flat-bar bikes. Drop bar road bikes won't fit the throttle, but the kit runs fine without it (pedal assist only), which keeps it classified as a Class I e-bike.
